Lifestyle medicine is a specialization of medicine focused on preventive health care and self-care, concerned with the prevention, research, education and treatment of disorders caused by lifestyle factors and preventable causes of death such as malnutrition, physical inactivity, chronic stress and self-destructive behaviors, including smoking and drug or alcohol abuse.
The aim of lifestyle medicine is to improve the health and well-being of individuals by applying its six pillars: healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, restful sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social ties to prevent chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity.
